Prototype Documentation

Finally...

One of the most popular javascript libraries, Prototype, has finally released a decent set of documentation. I'm really pleased, because it was a little difficult to work with not knowing what was available, and how to use all the tools.

Their website is very simple and easy to use, and will quickly become one of my most visited sites. If you haven't used Prototype, I highly reccomend taking a look at its features. It makes javascript development very fast and simple, even for complex problems. I've used it to great success. I don't know how it matches up with some other javascript libraries yet, but I'm planning on reviewing all of them.

Jonathan Snook does a pretty decent job of covering a lot of these JavaScript libraries. He's got a Prototype 1.5.0 Cheat Sheet available here:

If you snoop around at his site you'll probably find some similar information for other popular JavaScript libraries.

Hi

My name is Paul Mastin, and I am currently a Peace Corps Volunteer in Albania. Prior to coming here, I was a web developer working in Virginia. I have worked a bit with different Javascript libraries and found that Scriptaculous actually had some good docs on Prototype. I haven't spent much time on web development in the past few months, so I haven't seen the prototype docs, but will take a look at them. I was curious what you thought about JQuery. A fellow I worked with had a lot of great things to say about it, but I wasn't that impressed with it. Sure it uses things like method chaining, which are useful for the nonprogramming types out there, but I think that is one of its primary weaknesses. Instead of trying to abstract the differences between Javascript implementations, as Prototype does, one has to completely change the way that the put code together. I was curious what others thought were about this....
