Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department
The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department works to improve community health and safety through:
- Controlling communicable diseases,
- Protecting drinking water and food supplies,
- Preventing illness and death caused by behavior choices,
- Strengthening families, and
- Preparing effective responses to public health emergencies and natural disasters.
Needs
TPCHD was using FrontPage to manage their website and decided in 2004 that they were quickly losing control of their site. They needed web based permitting system for Food Safety permits as well as a way to track septic system inspections.
Solution
SiteCrafting developed a web-based content management and permitting system. This system allows not only staff at the Health Department to update content, but also has become a key piece in the management of permits and inspections. The site interfaces with internal Health Department databases and allows users real-time access to pay invoices, review inspections, and retrieve as-built drawings.

The Pierce County Library System consists of 17 branches and three bookmobiles to serve the public. The library’s collection includes more than a million books, CDs and films, and numerous programs that encourage children to read assist with schoolwork. The library also sponsors several events for the community including computer workshops for those 55 and older, and employs staff members fluent in Spanish and Korean.
Needs
The Pierce County Library system was managing a website using FrontPage and needed a more professional layout and a more efficient way to manage new content. Beyond just the website, the Library had an intranet - “Staff Web” and needed a way to reserve rooms, register for classes, track summer reading, and manage entries in their teen writing contest.
Solution
SiteCrafting developed a web-based platform to fit the needs of both Pierce County Library patrons as well as staff. The platform serves as the content management system for both the private and staff websites, room reservation and class registration system, “In Our Own Words” writing contest management, and blog management system.

“We are very pleased with the redesigned site. From a technical standpoint, this is so much more robust. The site is a conduit to various materials people can check out and use. People can reserve a book online. It’s also a conduit to other services we have – people can download movies to their computers, download ebooks, players or download audio books to their computers.
The public has given the website very high responses in our surveys. We received high ratings on both the navigation and the look and feel of the site.”

Tacoma Public Utilities
Tacoma Public Utilities consists of
three division: Tacoma Power, Tacoma Water, and Tacoma Rail. TPU has
been publicly owned since 1893 and is the largest department in City
government, with approximately 1,200 employees. Customers include
residents of Tacoma, neighboring cities, and Pierce County.
Needs
TPU issued an RFP in the Summer of 2006 for a new website
design and Content Management System (CMS). The new site needed to
integrate the four areas of Tacoma Public Utilities as well as
integrate with the City of Tacoma’s SAP system for permitting.
Solution
SiteCrafting worked the TPU on the site architecture,
page layout and web functionality. The site features a central login
area for managing each of TPUs web properties. Users are granted access
to the areas they only have permission to edit. A full-featured Media
area allows access to press information, blogs, and other media related
materials.
