Navigating a City
The City of Tukwila is located in King County, just south of Seattle. Tukwila is a local leader in retail/commercial sales, warehousing, and distribution of goods and manufacturing.
- Incorporated in 1908
- Approximately 20,000 residents
- 180 acres of parks
- 9.65 square miles of land area
The City of Tukwila needed a website that solved the challenge of how to best organize pages, content, and information in a way that was usable and intuitive. They also needed to modernize their design to be mobile-friendly and set up a content management system that enabled easy updates and changes.
- Responsive design
- User-focused information architecture
- Implementation of a CMS
- Contact directory
- Tiered user permissions & content management workflow
Through user testing, the project team was able to identify top tasks, services, and information groupings to inform what became the final site navigation. Site visitors can navigate based on how they identify with the city: either as a resident, visitor, business owner, or someone seeking government information. Topics that are visited most frequently as quickly accessed through a “How Do I” section.
The new website provides flexible page templates that allow departments to highlight differing pieces of information in useful ways. The widget-oriented templates accommodate Popular Links, Upcoming Events, and Contact Information.
