The terms “mobile-friendly” and “responsive web design” have been getting a lot of press lately, but the mobile web has been around longer than you might think.
The History of Mobile
The mobile web has been around since 1996, with Finnish cell providers offering access to the web on a Nokia Communicator 9000. The term Responsive Design began gaining popularity after Ethan Marcotte coined the term in 2010. One study by Stone Temple Consulting suggests that as many as 50% of non-mobile friendly sites have dropped in rank since the Google update, and nearly half of consumers say they won’t return to a website if it doesn’t load properly on their mobile devices.

- 77% of mobile searches occur at home or at work even when desktop computers are available
- 46% of people using mobile devices report having problems viewing a traditional, non-responsive website.
- In Q3 2014, smartphone traffic to ecommerce sites grew by more than 62 percent and revenue grew 141 percent
